Fairytale Pumpkin vs Musquée de Provence: The Same Real Heirloom
By Autumn Prairie Pumpkins
If you have shopped for a deep-ribbed, flat French pumpkin, you have probably seen it sold two ways: as "Fairytale" and as "Musquée de Provence." Here is the short answer. They are the same pumpkin. Fairytale is simply the American trade name that seed catalogs gave to Musquée de Provence, an old heirloom from the south of France. Same variety, same seed, two names.
That matters for one reason beyond avoiding confusion: species. Musquée de Provence is a true Cucurbita moschata. We mention this because some catalogs that sell it as "Fairytale" list it under the wrong species in their own spec tables, and species is not a technicality in a Kansas garden. It changes how the plant handles our summer.
Why the species is the whole point
Moschata pumpkins have solid, vine-rooting stems. That is exactly what makes them resistant to the squash vine borer, the pest that ends more Kansas squash plants than anything else. A pumpkin labeled as a hollow-stemmed Cucurbita pepo would not carry that same resistance. So if you are buying "Fairytale" seed, you want to know you are getting the genuine moschata, not a mislabel. The one we grow, Musquée de Provence, is the real thing.
What you actually get
Musquée de Provence is a showpiece. Big flat wheels of deep ribbing, ripening from green to a rich tan, usually in the 10 to 20 pound range, ready around 120 days. The flesh is thick, deep orange, and holds up beautifully for pies, roasting, and long storage. It is as much a table centerpiece as it is a cooking pumpkin.
Growing it in Kansas
Give it room and give it time. This is a long-season, full-size vine, so start it early enough to finish before frost, and plant it where it has space to run. The good news is the same moschata constitution that makes it beautiful also makes it tough through a Kansas July. For the full timeline and spacing, see our Musquée de Provence growing guide, and for the species story, moschata vs pepo.
