Vine Borer Resistant Pumpkin Seeds

Every variety in this collection is naturally resistant to squash vine borers, grown and field-tested in Newton, Kansas (Zone 6b). All are Cucurbita moschata, the species with thick, solid stems that vine borers struggle to penetrate. If you have lost pumpkins, zucchini, or yellow squash to borers, these moschata varieties (both open-pollinated heirlooms and F1 hybrids) are your long-term answer.

Why moschata resists the borer

Borers lay eggs at the base of the plant, and the larvae tunnel into hollow stems to feed. Most summer squash and jack-o-lantern pumpkins are C. pepo, with soft, hollow stems that borers hollow out in days. Moschata stems are dense and fibrous, so larvae struggle to get established. Resistance is not immunity, but it is the difference between a vine that collapses in July and one producing into fall. The biology is in our moschata resistance guide; prevention is in the vine borer management guide.
