Kansas Garden Seeds
Kansas Garden Seeds — Heirloom Pumpkins & Squash for Zone 6b
Every seed we sell ships from Newton, Kansas — Zone 6b, right in the heart of the Great Plains. We grow and trial our varieties in the same hot summers, late frosts, and clay soil you're dealing with. If a variety can't handle Kansas, it doesn't make the catalog.
Why Kansas Gardeners Choose Autumn Prairie
The squash vine borer is the number-one pumpkin killer in the Midwest. Every seed variety we carry is either naturally resistant (Cucurbita moschata) or a tested hybrid bred to survive vine borer pressure. No guesswork. No heartbreak in August.
Our collection includes heirloom varieties from around the world — Seminole pumpkins from Florida, Black Futsu from Japan, Ayote squash from Guatemala, Musquée de Provence from France — all proven in Kansas soil. Non-GMO, and selected for real-world performance in Zone 6b. Most varieties are open-pollinated heirlooms — we also carry a few F1 hybrids bred for extra disease resistance.
What Grows Best in Kansas
For first-time Kansas pumpkin growers, start with Seminole Pumpkin (bulletproof vine borer resistance), Waltham Butternut (the classic storage squash), or Dickinson (the original Libby's pie pumpkin). All three are heavy producers in our climate and tolerate the July heat that wilts most garden crops.
If you're looking for something unusual, try Shishigatani (a rare Kyoto heirloom) or Cushaw Green-Striped (an Appalachian classic that's been grown since the 1800s). Both thrive in Kansas.
Planting Guide for Kansas (Zone 6b)
Direct sow after last frost — typically mid-May in central Kansas. Soil temperature should be at least 65°F. All our Cucurbita moschata varieties need 95–120 days to mature, so timing matters. Start seeds indoors in late April if you want a head start.
Space hills 6–8 feet apart. Moschata varieties are vigorous runners — give them room. Mulch heavily to retain moisture during July and August heat.
