Tromboncino (also called Zucchetta) is an Italian heirloom Cucurbita moschata that doubles as both a summer and winter squash. Pick young at 12–15 inches for a mild, nutty zucchini substitute, or let fruits mature on the vine for a dense winter squash with sweet orange flesh. The long, curved neck is nearly all solid meat with seeds concentrated in the small bulb end.
This vigorous climber naturally trellises itself on fences and arbors, keeping fruit off the ground and away from rot. As a true moschata, Tromboncino is SVB resistant and laughs at Kansas heat. It's also one of the most productive squash you can grow — a single plant can yield 20+ fruits per season.
Growing notes: Direct sow after last frost. Provide a sturdy trellis or fence for climbing. Space 3–4 ft apart. Harvest young (60 days) for summer squash or mature (100 days) for winter storage. Cured fruits store 3–4 months.
