How Much Caffeine Is in Decaf Coffee? The Evening Cup in the Patch

By Autumn Prairie Pumpkins

By mid-July the Kansas heat does not really break until the sun gets low. The patch is quiet then. The vines have stopped complaining, the soil has let go of the afternoon, and the whole garden smells green and dusty at the same time. That is the hour we like a second cup. Which raises the question we get more than almost any other: how much caffeine is in decaf coffee, and is it low enough for an eight o'clock walk through the rows?

The short answer is: much less than you think, but not zero. Here is the honest version.

How Much Caffeine Is in Decaf Coffee, Really?

A typical 8 oz cup of decaf carries somewhere around 2 to 5 mg of caffeine. A regular cup of the same size runs closer to 95 mg. So you are looking at roughly one fiftieth of what is in your morning cup, give or take.

Decaf is not caffeine free, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. In the United States, coffee has to have at least 97% of its caffeine removed before it can legally be called decaffeinated. That last sliver stays behind. It is a trace, not a dose.

For most people, a cup of decaf in the evening lands the same way a square of dark chocolate does. Barely a blip. You know your own body better than any blog does.

How Much Caffeine Is in Decaf Coffee Compared to What You Drank This Morning?

Put it side by side and it gets easier to picture:

  • Regular drip coffee, 8 oz: about 95 mg
  • Decaf coffee, 8 oz: about 2 to 5 mg
  • A cup of black tea: about 45 mg
  • Dark chocolate, one ounce: about 12 mg

Read that list again and notice something: a cup of decaf has less caffeine in it than a bite of chocolate cake. That is the part that surprises folks. The word "decaf" carries a whiff of compromise, like you are drinking coffee with the good part taken out. But the good part, the warmth, the smell, the ten minutes of standing still with something hot in your hands, none of that lives in the caffeine.

Water Processed, and Why the Method Matters

Not all decaf is made the same way. Some of it uses chemical solvents to strip the caffeine out. Some of it uses nothing but water, time, and a carbon filter.

Our Decaf Signature Coffee is the water-processed kind: 99.9% caffeine free, 100% Arabica, ground, 8 oz, packed by hand in Newton. The process is a slow soak that pulls the caffeine and leaves the flavor where it belongs. No solvents. It is the bag we hand the skeptics first, because it still tastes like coffee instead of tasting like an apology.

That is the cup for the evening walk. All the ritual, none of the buzz.

The Two Cups of a Gardener's Day

There is a rhythm to this that took us a few seasons to notice.

The morning cup has a job. You are out early because in July that is the only civilized hour, checking the undersides of leaves, looking for the sawdust at the base of a stem that means the borers found you. That cup should have some backbone. Prairie Blaze, our bold medium roast, is what usually rides along in the travel mug. If you like a lighter, smoother start, Prairie Sunrise does that job. Not sure which one you are? The Sunrise & Blaze Duo settles the argument the honest way.

The evening cup has no job at all. That is the whole point of it. The work is done, the hose is coiled, and you are just walking the rows because you want to look at them. That cup does not need to wake you up. It needs to keep you outside a little longer.

We have written before about why a morning ritual matters as much as the tools, and we still believe it. A garden asks a lot of you. The cup is how you give something back to yourself in the middle of all that giving. Decaf just means you get to do it twice.

One Last Thing About Those Grounds

Decaf grounds are still grounds. When the pot is done, they go where the regular ones go: into the compost, into the pile, back into the dirt they came from. Decaffeinated does not mean deactivated. If you have wondered whether the spent grounds are doing your patch any favors, we dug into that question in are coffee grounds good for pumpkins, and the answer has more nuance than the internet gives it.

Nothing wasted. That is most of what we believe, put simply.

The Answer, Short

How much caffeine is in decaf coffee? Roughly 2 to 5 mg per 8 oz cup, against about 95 mg for regular. Enough to notice on a lab report. Not enough to keep you staring at the ceiling at midnight because you wanted to watch the light go orange over the vines.

Pour the second cup. The patch is better at that hour anyway.

You can find the Decaf Signature and the rest of our small-batch bags in the coffee collection. Orders over $25 ship free.

One more decaf worth knowing: Harvest Dusk, a sugarcane-process decaf from our sourced Harvest line, 12 oz whole bean. Same evening-cup mission, different process.
