Tahitian Melon Squash Seeds — a giant Pacific heirloom (Cucurbita moschata) producing enormous fruits with sweet, dense orange flesh. Vine borer resistant and heat tolerant. Shipped from Kansas.

Tahitian Melon Squash is one of those varieties with a history longer than any seed catalog. A Cucurbita moschata heirloom from the Pacific Islands, it was among the early rediscovered varieties that launched the modern heirloom seed movement — and for good reason. Few winter squash match it for sheer size, sweetness, or the kind of storage life that makes a September harvest last well into spring.

The fruits are large — commonly 15 to 25 pounds at maturity, with exceptional plants occasionally reaching 40 pounds or more. The skin is a smooth, warm tan-buff at full cure. Cut one open and the interior is dense, richly orange, and unmistakably fragrant. The flavor is sweet and full, closer to a premium butternut than anything from the canned goods aisle.

Why It Thrives in Kansas Gardens

As Cucurbita moschata, Tahitian Melon Squash carries the thick, corky stem structure that makes the entire moschata species naturally resistant to squash vine borers. In Kansas and across the Midwest — where vine borers reliably devastate Cucurbita pepo crops (zucchini, acorn squash, most jack-o'-lanterns) by midsummer — this is not a minor detail. Tahitian vines grow through July, through August, and all the way to a full fall harvest without the borer pressure that ends so many other gardens' pumpkin seasons early.

Add to that its heat tolerance — developed across generations in the warm Pacific — and Tahitian Melon Squash handles Kansas summers with composure most Northern European heirlooms simply don't have.

Growing Guide

Starting

Direct sow after last frost when soil temperature reaches 65°F — typically early to mid-May in Zone 6b (Newton/Wichita area). For earlier harvests, start indoors in 3–4 inch pots 3–4 weeks before your transplant date. Vigorous germinator in warm soil; expect seedlings in 5–8 days at 70°F+.

Spacing

Vines are expansive — 8–10 feet between plants, rows 10–12 feet apart. Train along a fence or property edge to manage spread. Fruits are too heavy for trellising; let them set on the ground.

Days to Maturity

Approximately 95–120 days from transplant. In Zone 6b, plan for late-September to October harvest.

Harvest and Storage

Harvest when the stem corks and the skin resists a fingernail scratch. Cure 10–14 days in a warm, dry location. Properly cured, Tahitian Melon Squash stores 6–12 months at room temperature.

In the Kitchen

Halve and roast cut-side down at 375°F for 45–60 minutes. Dense flesh holds up in soups and curries without turning watery. For pies, the flavor rivals anything from a can. For roasted cubes, it caramelizes beautifully with just olive oil and salt. One large fruit goes a long way — 20+ pounds of premium eating squash from a single harvest.

Seed Saving

Open-pollinated heirloom — seeds saved from healthy, fully mature fruits grow true to type year after year. Will cross with other Cucurbita moschata (butternut, Seminole, Musquée de Provence, Tromboncino) but not with Cucurbita pepo. Isolate by 500+ feet to maintain purity.
