Pumpkins are heavy feeders. A single vine can run 15 to 20 feet, support multiple fruits, and pull significant nutrients from the soil over a long growing season. They will grow in average soil, but they will thrive when you feed with some intention.
What Nutrients Pumpkins Actually Need
The three numbers on any fertilizer bag, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), each do a specific job for your pumpkin plants.
Nitrogen drives leaf and vine growth. Too little and plants look pale and spindly. Too much at the wrong time and you will get a jungle of green with flowers that drop and no fruit to show for it.

At First Flowers: Shift the Formula
This is the transition most gardeners miss. When flowers start opening, male flowers on straight stems first and then female flowers with the small swollen base behind the petals, it is time to reduce nitrogen and move toward a phosphorus and potassium-forward fertilizer. Something in the range of 5-10-10 works well here.
High nitrogen at flowering is one of the most common reasons pumpkins drop blossoms and fail to set fruit. The vine wants to keep growing vine. You want it to make pumpkins. Pulling back on nitrogen tips the balance toward fruit.

Natural Amendments vs. Synthetic Fertilizers
Both work. Synthetic fertilizers are fast-acting and precisely dosed. Natural soil amendments, fish emulsion, kelp meal, composted manure, alfalfa pellets, feed soil biology as well as the plant and are harder to over-apply.
