Most sunflowers ask for a back fence and a ladder. This one asks for a five gallon pot. Balcony Beauty tops out around 15 inches and stays tidy, about 9 to 10 inches wide, but the flower is not scaled down with it: a proper 6 to 7 inch golden head on a stem short enough to sit on a railing without snapping in the wind.

That makes it the sunflower for the people who think they cannot grow one. Apartment balconies, front steps, a window box, the corner of a deck. It blooms in about 50 days, so a seed sown in June is flowering by August, and the bees find it just the same as they find the nine footers.
