Every autumn, one pumpkin in the patch gets asked about first. Musquee de Maroc is that pumpkin.

This North African heirloom belongs to Cucurbita moschata, the same tough, vine borer resistant species as our Seminole and Musquee de Provence. That matters in a Kansas garden. While C. pepo varieties get shredded by squash vine borers mid-summer, moschata's solid stems keep the vines going through heat, humidity, and prairie wind.

The fruits are round to bell-shaped, typically 7 to 13 pounds, in shifting shades of terracotta, green, yellow, and buff. When summer heat arrives, the skin covers itself in ornamental warts, and no two fruits look alike. It is one of the most striking display pumpkins you can grow, and then it earns its keep in the kitchen: firm, sweet flesh with a nutty flavor that roasts well, purees smoothly, and holds together in soups and stews. Cured fruit stores up to 6 months.

Plan for roughly 90 to 110 days from planting. Give it room, because moschata vines are vigorous. A cattle panel tunnel or a generous patch of ground will serve it well.
