History & Origin

Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck is one of the oldest documented squash varieties in North America, grown by Pennsylvania Dutch communities since the 18th century. Its distinctive elongated, curved neck was a functional trait, the long, tapered neck stores more flesh, and the thick rinds protect the fruit through months of winter storage. Seed Savers Exchange traces its lineage to family farms across the Appalachian region.

In the Kitchen

The sweet, fine-grained orange flesh is ideal for hearty soups, pies, and roasting. The neck section is largely seedless, making it extremely efficient to process. Cube and roast with brown butter and sage, or slow-cook into a deeply flavored squash bisque. The sheer size of a mature fruit means one plant can feed a family for months.
