A moschata F1 hybrid (a muscat-pumpkin × butternut cross) with a frosted tan rind and butternut-style flesh. The breeder selected it for reduced vines, so it takes less room than a full-size vining pumpkin, but it still runs and it is not a bush.

History & Origin

Autumn Crown is a modern Cucurbita moschata F1 hybrid, crossing a traditional muscat pumpkin with a butternut. It keeps the sweet, dense flesh, small seed cavity, and long storage of the moschata family in a ribbed, flattened nutmeg shape on reduced vines. As an F1 hybrid, saved seed will not grow true to type.

In the Kitchen

Roast halves at 400°F for 45 minutes until caramelized. The flesh makes exceptional soups, risotto, and ravioli filling. Its natural sweetness pairs beautifully with sage, brown butter, and nutmeg. Try it as a butternut substitute in any recipe for richer, more complex flavor.
