A dessert-quality butternut bred for humid Southern summers, with downy mildew resistance, very good keeping quality, and high sugar and dry matter. Fruits average 2.5 to 3 pounds, deep tan with a faint pink hue, and the flavor leans nutty rather than floral.

History & Origin
Baker's Branch is a new open-pollinated butternut, not an heirloom. It was bred in central Virginia starting in 2017 from a cross of South Anna Butternut (three quarters of its parentage) and Chinese Tropical Pumpkin (one quarter), and selection for keeping quality, concentrated fruit set, and yield is still ongoing. It keeps South Anna's eating quality and downy mildew resistance with a slightly finer texture and a nuttier flavor. The name comes from a creek near the fields where it was developed. Released as an open-source variety: seed may be saved, shared, and replanted freely.
In the Kitchen
Peel and cube for roasting, soups, or gratins. The dense flesh holds its shape when cooked, making it excellent for curries and stews. Try it roasted with olive oil, maple syrup, and a pinch of cayenne for a simple side that steals the show.
