Chinese Tropical Pumpkin is an open-pollinated moschata that is most likely Taiwanese in origin. It was grown and adapted in Hawaii for years, where pumpkins of this type are common, before it reached mainland seed circles through a Hawaii grower. It is a working-garden variety, not a commercial cultivar, which is exactly why you can't find it anywhere else in the U.S. seed market.

The fruit is round to slightly flattened, averaging about 4 pounds, with skin that runs pink, green and blue with a white bloom at harvest and ripens to deep tan in storage. The flesh is dense, bright orange, high in sugar and dry matter, and the flavor is both pumpkiny and nutty. It carries good downy mildew resistance and has been a top performer for yield, disease resistance and flavor in Mid-Atlantic variety trials.

This variety is Cucurbita moschata. Moschata squash is generally less susceptible to squash vine borer damage than many other squash, but resistance does not mean immunity. Inspect vines for eggs, entry holes, sawdust-like frass and wilting, and continue watching for other pests and diseases.

Will it ripen before frost? Chinese Tropical Pumpkin needs 100 to 120 days from sowing. In a typical Newton, Kansas Zone 6b season the first fall frost arrives between October 10 and 20, so direct sow by about June 3 to finish with a two week cushion.
