Five Moschata Classics, One Collection

Every variety in this collection is Cucurbita moschata, the species known for naturally resisting squash vine borers and adapting to heat, humidity, and the real-world conditions of a Midwest garden. These are not trendy novelties. They are varieties that have earned their place by feeding families for generations.

Two of these, Mrs. Amerson’s and Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck, are rarely available outside of small-batch seed savers. You will not find them at a box store, and most large seed catalogs do not carry them. We grow and pack them ourselves in Newton, Kansas.

3-Variety Option Includes (20 seeds each, 60 seeds total):

Long Island Cheese Pumpkin, the benchmark pie pumpkin of the American Northeast. Tan, deeply ribbed, flat-topped fruits with sweet, fine-grained orange flesh that bakes into exceptional pie filling. Stores well into winter.

Mrs. Amerson’s Pumpkin, a rare Southern family heirloom passed down through generations of Appalachian gardeners. Exceptional flavor, long storage, and reliable moschata performance in warm climates. Not available from large seed companies. One of our flagship varieties.

Seminole Pumpkin, originally cultivated by the Seminole people in Florida’s borer-heavy, humid climate. One of the most vine-borer-resistant varieties in existence. Stores for up to a year off the vine. Outstanding in soups and pies.

5-Variety Option Includes (20 seeds each, 100 seeds total):

Everything in the 3-variety option, plus:

Musquee de Provence, a French market classic with deeply ribbed, chestnut skin and rich, dense orange flesh. Grown in Provence for centuries. Beautiful enough to display on the porch, flavorful enough to cook down to the rind.

Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck, an Appalachian moschata heirloom with a curved neck and dense, sweet flesh that has fed mountain families for over a century. Deep storage keeper. Vigorous vines that handle heat and humidity without complaint.

Why All Moschata?

Cucurbita moschata varieties have solid stems that squash vine borers struggle to penetrate. They also adapt better to heat and humidity than most Cucurbita maxima or pepo types. For Kansas Zone 6b and similar climates, moschata is the practical choice. These varieties represent the breadth of what the species can produce, from elegant French heirlooms to rare Appalachian keepers.

Growing Tips

  • Direct sow after last frost when soil reaches 65F
  • Space 4-6 feet apart in full sun
  • Amend with compost before planting, these are heavy feeders
  • All varieties are open-pollinated. Save seeds and grow better plants every year.
