South Anna Butternut is a modern Virginia open-pollinated variety with serious resistance genetics, developed specifically to hold up against the diseases and pests that plague butternut in the humid Mid-Atlantic. It's not in many U.S. catalogs, and that's a shame because it's one of the toughest butternuts you can plant on Kansas soil.
The fruit is a classic butternut shape with deeper orange flesh, richer flavor, and noticeably better storage than the Waltham standard. If you've grown butternut before and been disappointed by bland flesh or disease losses, South Anna is the upgrade.
Like everything in our catalog, it's Cucurbita moschata, which means vine borer resistance is built into the genetics. The thick fibrous stems block SVB larvae. In Kansas, where vine borer pressure peaks June through July, moschata is the difference between harvest and heartbreak. Vine borer resistance is kind of our thing at Autumn Prairie Pumpkins, and South Anna fits right in.

Full sun, well-draining soil, 6–10 feet of space per plant. Direct sow after soil hits 65°F or transplant 3–4 weeks before last frost in Zone 6b. South Anna handles humidity and heat well and keeps producing late into the season. Mulch heavy and rotate cucurbits yearly.
