Choose three or five pumpkin and squash varieties for a garden where vine borers are a concern. Every option contains 20 seeds per variety. Compare familiar cooking pumpkins with varieties you may not have grown before.

What is in each seed collection?

• 3 varieties, 60 seeds total: Seminole, Thai Kang Kob and Chinese Tropical, 20 seeds each.
• 5 varieties, 100 seeds total: The same three, plus Cushaw Green-Striped and Tromboncino, 20 seeds each.

Why these varieties?

Seminole, Thai Kang Kob, Chinese Tropical and Tromboncino belong to Cucurbita moschata, a group generally less susceptible to squash vine borers than many other squash. Cushaw Green-Striped belongs to Cucurbita argyrosperma. Resistance varies by variety, pest pressure and growing conditions. These seeds are not a guarantee against borers, squash bugs or disease.

• Seminole: A cooking and storage pumpkin suited to a warm growing season.
• Thai Kang Kob: Ribbed fruit with dense flesh for roasting and curries.
• Chinese Tropical: A vigorous pumpkin for growers with room for its vines.
• Cushaw Green-Striped: Large, striped squash with mild flesh for baking.
• Tromboncino: Pick young for summer-squash use, or let the fruit mature for winter-squash use.

Plan your planting

Wait until frost danger has passed and the soil is warm. Give the vines room, build the soil with compost, and scout regularly for eggs, wilting and stem damage. Match each variety’s maturity to the frost-free days in your garden. A trellis can support Tromboncino, but it still needs adequate root space and water.

These varieties are open-pollinated. To save seed true to type, manage pollination to prevent unwanted crossing with other varieties of the same species.
