Stop Losing Your Squash to Vine Borers

Tired of watching your squash plants wilt and die from squash vine borers? This curated collection of solid-stemmed Cucurbita moschata and Cucurbita argyrosperma varieties carries natural vine borer resistance proven over generations in borer-heavy regions across the South, Midwest, and beyond.

All varieties share the tough, solid stems that vine borers struggle to penetrate, unlike the hollow-stemmed C. pepo squash that borers love to destroy. These are not just resistant. They are productive, delicious, and worth growing in their own right.

You will not find this specific combination of moschata varieties assembled anywhere else. Several of them are difficult to source individually. We grow and pack them ourselves in Newton, Kansas.

3-Variety Option Includes (20 seeds each, 60 seeds total):

Seminole Pumpkin, the gold standard for vine borer resistance. Originally grown by the Seminole people in Florida’s borer-heavy climate. Heat tolerant, stores up to a year, and the sweet orange flesh is exceptional in pies and soups.

Thai Kang Kob Pumpkin, a Southeast Asian powerhouse bred for disease resistance in tropical heat. Compact, ribbed fruits with dense, sweet flesh. Resistant to vine borers, powdery mildew, and downy mildew.

Chinese Tropical Pumpkin, heat-tolerant variety that thrives where vine borers are worst. Large, flattened fruits with rich orange flesh excellent roasted or in curries. Vigorous vines that power through pest pressure.

5-Variety Option Includes (20 seeds each, 100 seeds total):

Everything in the 3-variety option, plus:

Cushaw Green-Striped, a classic Southern heirloom that outgrows vine borers with vigorous, sprawling vines. The large, striped fruits have mild, sweet flesh perfect for baking. A staple of Appalachian gardens for centuries.

Tromboncino (Italian Climbing Zucchini), this Italian heirloom climbs trellises and fences, keeping fruit off the ground and away from pests. Pick young as a summer squash or let it mature into a nutty winter squash. Incredibly productive.

Why These Varieties Work

All varieties are Cucurbita moschata except Cushaw Green-Striped in the 5-variety option, which is Cucurbita argyrosperma, a close cousin with the same advantage. Both species have solid stems that squash vine borers have difficulty boring into. Unlike hollow-stemmed C. pepo varieties like zucchini, yellow squash, and most jack-o-lanterns, moschata squash gives borers nowhere to go, and the vigorous vines can often outgrow minor damage even in high-pressure gardens.

This collection is built for gardeners in zones 5-10 who have struggled with vine borers and are ready to actually harvest squash this year.

Growing Tips

  • Direct sow after last frost when soil is warm (65F+)
  • Space plants 4-6 feet apart in full sun, rich soil with compost
  • Tromboncino can be trellised to save space
  • All varieties are open-pollinated. Save seeds from your best performers each season.
