History & Origin

Wan Fu (万福) means "ten thousand blessings" in Chinese, a fitting name for a prolific, reliable producer. This hybrid was developed to meet the high standards of Chinese home cooks who prize dense, dry, richly flavored squash flesh. It has gained a following in North American gardens for its reliability and culinary versatility.

In the Kitchen

Steam or roast halves and serve simply with butter and salt. The dense, dry flesh is ideal for Chinese-style red-braised pumpkin, congee, or steamed pumpkin pudding. Also excellent in Western applications, pumpkin pie, bisque, and roasted pumpkin salad all benefit from its concentrated, sweet flavor.

Common Questions

Is Wan Fu really vine borer resistant?

Highly vine borer resistant. Solid moschata stems are hard for borer larvae to tunnel into. Resistant, not immune, so still scout in June and July.

When should I plant Wan Fu in Kansas?

Direct sow or transplant once soil holds 65 to 70 F, typically mid May to early June in Zone 6b. At 95 to 100 days to maturity, a late May planting ripens in September to October, right on time for curing before frost.

Is Wan Fu F1 a true kabocha?

It has kabocha-style dense, sweet flesh, but it is a Cucurbita moschata hybrid rather than a C. maxima kabocha. That species difference is the point: you get the kabocha eating experience on vines that resist squash vine borers.
