History & Origin
Wan Fu (万福) means "ten thousand blessings" in Chinese, a fitting name for a prolific, reliable producer. This hybrid was developed to meet the high standards of Chinese home cooks who prize dense, dry, richly flavored squash flesh. It has gained a following in North American gardens for its reliability and culinary versatility.
In the Kitchen
Steam or roast halves and serve simply with butter and salt. The dense, dry flesh is ideal for Chinese-style red-braised pumpkin, congee, or steamed pumpkin pudding. Also excellent in Western applications, pumpkin pie, bisque, and roasted pumpkin salad all benefit from its concentrated, sweet flavor.
