Xiye Butternut is a Chinese regional moschata that shows up in almost no American seed catalogs. It's a true working garden variety, selected in a climate that doesn't forgive weakness, and it brings the traits Kansas gardeners actually need: heat tolerance, pest resistance, and long storage life.
The fruit is a classic butternut silhouette with tan skin and rich, deep orange flesh that gets sweeter in storage. It handles the brutal mid-summer stretch without losing fruit set, and cured squash will hold in a cool dry room for months.
Like every variety in our catalog, Xiye is Cucurbita moschata, which means vine borer resistance is built into the genetics. Thick fibrous stems shut out SVB larvae. In Kansas, where vine borer pressure peaks June through July and takes down pepo squash planting after planting, moschata is the difference between a real harvest and a wasted summer. Vine borer resistance is kind of our thing at Autumn Prairie Pumpkins, and Xiye earns its place on that list.

In the Kansas Garden
Full sun, well-draining soil, 6–10 feet of space per plant. Direct sow after soil hits 65°F or transplant 3–4 weeks before last frost in Zone 6b. Xiye thrives in the exact conditions that crush weaker varieties, hot, dry, and full sun. Mulch heavy, compost instead of pushing nitrogen, and rotate cucurbits yearly.
