Doran Round Squash is what happens when a butternut decides it would rather be a pie pumpkin. Small, round, tan, and squat, with golden orange flesh and a sweet flavor that keeps improving the longer it sits on the shelf. The variety comes from the Netherlands, passed along by a plant breeder and seed saver, and it has quietly earned a following with market growers who want a single-dinner winter squash that stores like a champion.

Why this squash

  • Vine borer resistant: a true Cucurbita moschata, with the dense, solid stems squash vine borers rarely get through
  • Right-sized fruit: 2 to 4 pounds, round to slightly lobed, so one squash feeds a family dinner with nothing left to babysit
  • Golden orange, sweet flesh: pie pumpkin looks with butternut-grade eating quality, and the sweetness builds in storage
  • Long keeper: cured fruit stores for months in a cool, dry spot, and growers report well over a year in a dry room
  • Open-pollinated: save seed from your best fruit and it grows true next year

About 100 days to maturity. If frost is closing in, fruit can be picked a little early and cured indoors, which makes this a forgiving choice for a late Kansas planting.
