What to expect

  • Variety: Seminole, Larger Fruited — a distinct selection offered separately from our standard Seminole listing.
  • Species: Cucurbita moschata
  • Fruit: Mature tan rind and orange flesh; fruits can reach approximately 8–9 pounds. Size and shape vary.
  • Maturity: Approximately 95 days under favorable growing conditions. Allow extra time for cool weather and other delays.
  • Habit: Vigorous, sprawling vines that need generous garden space.

Planting and care

Choose full sun and well-drained soil enriched with finished compost. Sow about 1 inch deep after frost danger has passed and the soil is consistently warm, ideally around 70°F or warmer. Allow roughly 6–8 feet between plants, with room for vines to spread. Keep the seed zone evenly moist without waterlogging it.

For Kansas gardens, plan a spring planting and fall harvest. Count backward from your local first-frost date and allow a weather buffer. Germination, maturity, fruit size and yield depend on soil, temperature, pollination and care.

Read our Seminole growing guide for general planting and care guidance. The larger-fruited selection has its own fruit-size and maturity estimates above.

Images are illustrative depictions of the variety. Actual fruit shape, size and color vary with growing conditions.
