Fight Powdery Mildew Naturally
Powdery mildew is one of the most common enemies of squash growers in Kansas and across the Midwest. This curated collection features five Cucurbita moschata varieties with strong natural resistance to powdery mildew, built through generations of selection in humid climates. The moschata species also provides significant vine borer resistance as a bonus, making these among the most resilient squash you can grow.
3-Variety Option Includes (20 seeds each, 60 seeds total):
Seminole Pumpkin, a Florida native bred in high-humidity, high-disease-pressure conditions for centuries. Outstanding natural resistance to both powdery mildew and vine borers. Stores up to a year. Exceptional in soups and pies.
Waltham Butternut, the award-winning All-America Selections butternut with reliable powdery mildew tolerance across a wide range of climates. Prolific, stores well, and handles Midwest humidity better than most.
Tahitian Melon Squash, a giant Pacific heirloom with thick flesh and strong disease tolerance developed in tropical growing conditions. Highly productive, vine borer resistant, and handles humidity and heat without complaint.
5-Variety Option Includes (20 seeds each, 100 seeds total):
Everything in the 3-variety option, plus:
Tromboncino (Italian Climbing Zucchini), this vigorous Italian heirloom powers through mildew pressure with fast-growing vines that can outgrow disease entirely. Trellis it to keep fruit off the ground. Pick young for summer squash or mature for winter storage.
Long Island Cheese Pumpkin, the benchmark heirloom pie pumpkin with moderate powdery mildew resistance and exceptional flavor. The sweet, fine-grained orange flesh has made it the pie baker’s choice for over 150 years.
Growing Tips
- Direct sow after last frost when soil reaches 65F
- Space 4-6 feet apart with excellent airflow to reduce humidity around leaves
- Avoid overhead watering: water at the base to keep foliage dry
- All varieties are open-pollinated. Save seeds and improve resistance each season.
