What are heirloom pumpkin seeds?

Heirloom pumpkin seeds are open-pollinated varieties that have been passed down through generations. Unlike hybrids, you can save seeds from heirloom pumpkins and grow the same variety year after year. Most of our seeds are open-pollinated heirlooms, and we also carry a few F1 hybrids. All of our seeds are non-GMO.

What growing zone are your seeds tested in?

Our seeds are grown and germination-tested on our Zone 6b homestead in Newton, Kansas, and we source additional seed from trusted growers when we need to. Most of our varieties also perform well in Zones 5-9. Each product listing includes specific growing zone recommendations.

Are your pumpkin seeds vine borer resistant?

Many of our Cucurbita moschata varieties are naturally resistant to squash vine borers, including Seminole Pumpkin, Long Island Cheese, Tromboncino, and Mrs. Amersons. We highlight vine borer resistance on each product page.

Vine Borer Resistant Pumpkin and Squash Varieties Compared

Every summer the squash vine borer takes out garden after garden of zucchini and jack-o-lanterns across Kansas and the Midwest. The varieties below fight back. Most are Cucurbita moschata, the species with solid stems that borer larvae struggle to tunnel into. Resistant does not mean immune, but these are the varieties that keep growing while others wilt.

Common Questions

Are these varieties completely immune to squash vine borers?

No variety is immune. Cucurbita moschata varieties have dense, solid stems that borer larvae struggle to tunnel into, so they are highly resistant and usually shrug off pressure that kills other squash. Cushaw types (C. argyrosperma) offer good resistance. We still recommend basic scouting in June and July.

Which vine borer resistant variety should a beginner start with?

Seminole Pumpkin and Waltham Butternut are the two we hand to first-time growers. Both are forgiving of Kansas heat, tolerate imperfect watering, and store for months after harvest.

Why do these varieties resist vine borers?

Squash vine borer moths prefer to lay eggs on thick, hollow stems like those of C. pepo and C. maxima. Moschata stems are solid and vine along the ground rooting at the nodes, so even if a larva gets in, the plant keeps feeding itself from other rooted points.
